Hilarious stories of comical characters...writing was sub par

I would NOT recommend this book to just anyone. Unless you have an affection for games of chance and/ or Las Vegas in general, it probably is not the book for you. That being said, if you have a taste for "Sin City," this is a must-read.

Konik paints vivid pictures of cunning, baffling, and hilarious individuals that are willing to lose it all on any given day. He extensively covers all the major games of chance, including some that are lesser known. He obviously knows these games on a personal level, and it shows through his words.

Konik's choice of language is probably the biggest shortcoming of this book. He uses word choices that is beyond appropriate for this particular audience. My guess is that most readers of this book are unfamiliar with words of such magnitude as "perspicacious" or "verisimilitude." Not to say that these words are too big to learn, but my guess is that most readers didnt go reaching for their dictionary.

In summary, it was really funny and lighthearted, but could have used additional editing.

Quick hitters with substance

I have probably given this book out as presents to at least a half dozen people since it's release. Although I don't want to jump on the person who gave the book 3*, they were completely missing the point.

This book was ranked #2 on the Wall Street Journal's list of the 5 best books on gambling.

This book opens up with the ultimate risk taker, Brian Zembic. A man who will take a bet on everything, and lives up to it. To be perfectly honest, as mentioned, it only takes up about 10-15% of the book, but I don't want it to take up more. As one of the other 5* reviewers said, the worst part of the book is that it stops.

We read bios on Trump, Walsh, Jordan, and Woods, but here we read "mini-bios" on a differnet style of person. Andrew Beyer, Roxy Roxborough, Archie Karas, Johnny Moss. You read about how odds are made, how blackjack is played, and how comps get you paid. Poker, Horse Racing, Backgammon, Sports Betting, Blackjack... on and on... But don't think its just about this, they are stories that put you inside, and you don't want to leave.

Obviously the book leans towards people who enjoy the art of gambling, but also to those curious about why they don't gamble. My favorite story in the book is the very last one, "The Hand That's Dealt". Konik knows how to paint a picture with words. The story takes place at a poker table, but it's the furthest thing from a poker story.

Overall, without a doubt, Excellent.

Fantastic, you'll wish it was longer.

This is one of the many "gambling milieu" books that have hit the scene over the course of the past few years; although, unlike many of the others, Konik's effort features strong writing and a furious pace. Upon finishing it, I took a look at the page numbers because I couldn't believe it was over. It wasn't that it was too short, the real problem was that it was too good. In small chip size pieces, Konik addresses the infamous world of gambling. His coverage is far better than that of the average commentator as he includes horse racing, greyhounds, blackjack, sports betting, and golf hustling within his narrative. To say this one is fascinating is an understatement. A better description is that it will even, dare I say, appeal to the general public--and, indeed, it has. The title essay concerns crazy proposition man Brian Zembic, and it may well be the best of the compilation. After all, how many people become quasi-transvestites for 100 grand? Well, that's the terrain you're in once you open these pages, and you'll be grateful that Konik did such a magnificent job of immersing himself in it.

How to summon the 72 names of God

Disapointed.A very average ritual, which anyone could think up.Followed by 72 pages which were blank except for the hebrew name in hebrew and english along the top.I couldnt see the point of this.Even this he got wrong and there were plenty of mistakes, such as putting RESH instead of DALETH.
I cant recomend it.

a lot lacking

In looking at purchasing books from amazon, I take in ratings and costs for material. This book is way overpriced for what it is. On each page the name of each God name( 3-three letter Hebrew words) is written individually on each page followed by 2/3's of emptied page. While there are simple instructions in the front that tell you to cite all the names then summons to one name you want to communicate with, the book offers no explanation or relevance of the God names. Without knowing what you are actually summonning, I don't think this book offers enough detail for you to summons. Also, I can't say that calling all 72 names is effective from just studying this book either because the book further lacks information on the pronunciation of the God names.

Another disappointment from this author

This is the second book from this author that I will be returning to Amazon (I ordered them together). I thought I had studied these subjects enough that maybe this author's books were better for beginners, BUT after reading the other reviews of this book, it was confirmed that, indeed, the book is poorly written, poorly put together and overpriced. I cannot recommend this book and must recommend that the buyers look to other authors on this subject who have given the time and attention to actually explaining both the subject and the rituals around how to deal with the angels.

Excellent broadbrush history.

A great romp through a broad swathe of cyberespionage history. I skimmed through the earlier chapters but was particularly interested in the events of the 80s and 90s. Apart from the history, the cast of characters, geniuses and weirdos was fun to read about. The author handles the technical aspects of cryptology pretty deftly (i.e. omits everything that can safely be omitted). There are references but some suggestions for further reading might have been useful. If the science behind it all is of interest the logical next book for the layperson would be 'Code' by Singh, followed by the appendices in 'Code' and for the crazy reader who wants to know more, 'Understanding Cryptography' is a reasonably accessible book for the mathematically mature.

Highly informative and entertaining

Gordon Corera's new book is about computers and spying. It all started at the beginning of WW1 and since then, the computer ahs been engaged in the world of the shadows game. The USA and Britain led the revolution in this field, but there were other secret services, such as the STASI which were suspicious of the new device and the result was in a 100-kilometer archive in Est Germany, which had details on most East Germans.According to Markus Wollf, computers could be hacked easily.
The book has some interesting episodes in the history of cyber-espionage and many technical details about the way computers play the Great Game. All in all, it is an easy journalistic read.

Hard to find book, still the expert voice in Echinoids

I first read a borrowed copy when I began working with fossil echinoids. Now that I have acquired my own copy it is an indispensable reference. Some of the scientific ideas in the book have been updated by newer research since its printing, but one still needs to know the point from which those idea diverge. If you read some of the author's own scientific papers in the last decade he even indicates where his own opinions have changed from statements made in this book. However, the majority of the content in this book remains relevant. I was lucky and found a relatively inexpensive copy, otherwise $150 to $200 prices were keeping me from purchasing this out of print book.

Disappointment-more like reprint of notes

This book was a disappointment because it appeared to be the publication of a course professor's notes and images. CRC Press does publish this type of book but it would enhance CRC Press's reputation if they were to require much more from author's who are trying to get their notes published in a book format. The text was brief and left the reader having to find other sources to fill in some of the gaps in knowledge. However, the worst part in my opinion was the images. Some of the images were too small and should have been enlarged to illustrate parts of the tissue or cells better. The illustrations on occasion lacked cohesion as they seemed to be drawings that had been computerized or stylized on the computer. The latter aspect is not a bad idea but one needs to make a reasonable linkage between the illustration or illustrations and text. I also expected that a Clinical Embryology text as this was purported to be would have much more clinical descriptions, connections and references. This was not the case. Sadly, I cannot recommend this text even for historical or simplicity reasons and I would suggest there are much better texts around even at the simpler and clinical level.
