CAPTIVATING STORY

Robert Munro, is a therapist who specializes in dream interpretation.
A practical no-nonsense character, he is disappointed and even annoyed, to learn that his ten-year-old son has
imaginary friends and that his wife's depression has not eased over time. He also believes that there is a pill for
everything. I enjoyed reading about this flawed character who is judgemental, a bit critical and unable to express emotions to his own family. How's that for a therapist?
Without giving too much away, Robert is stunned when he realizes that he is turning into his father, who he despises.
Luckily, Robert has a turning point in life that humbles him and makes him see his follies and how his behavior has impacted on those around him.
The writing is great, the premise is captivating and the story managed to wring many emotions from me, the reader. That to me is a great book.
Highly recommended.

Clever and Surprising!

I was taken in by this book right from the start, which is always a good sign. From the first couple of pages, it's a puzzle to the reader just as much to the protagonist. Dr. Robert Munro is a therapist who thinks he has all the answers, but as this compelling and thought-provoking story goes on, it becomes clear that he not only doesn't know the answers, he's not even sure what the questions are.

We follow Dr. Munro as he - and the reader - become less and less sure what's real, what's a dream, and what the difference even is. It's a testament to the author's skill that this all follows naturally, and the reader is drawn into it a little at a time until we're questioning everything right along with the protagonist.

The supporting characters are equally well-drawn and compelling, and it's clear that the author has a strong background and deep knowledge of psychology and the imagery of dreams. The prose is clear and comfortable reading, and the payoff at the end is well worth the journey to get there. I'd highly recommend this book, and will look out for Mr. Davis' other works.

Real dreams

Stormy Weather by Dermot Davis is a surprising book that follows it principal character in and out of reality, into and out of dreams. These perhaps separate worlds seem to coalesce, so the reader is swept along with Robert Munro's confusion, where frighteningly real illusions and occasional farce punctuate his tragically disintegrating life. The reader is drawn into the character's experience, and thus shares the sensation, despite Robert remaining a distinctly third person. A direct, deceptively simple style keeps up the pace, but reflective moments offer pause for real thought.

Robert Munro is a shrink. He copes with - or should that be does not cope with? - other people's stress, psychiatric problems, depression and delusion. He rents a space from Dr Harding, an office equipped with the tools of his trade, where he regularly assists his patients in the process of confronting their problems, a process that increasingly he seems less than able to apply to himself. Alison administers on reception. She reminds him of his appointments when his mind starts to wander. But Alison is sick, too often sick for Dr Harding's standards, and surely she will soon get her marching orders. Dr Harding applies these same exacting standards to everyone in his establishment, and Robert's recent behaviour has already caused concern and caught the attention. He has been scattered, to put it mildly. He has been late for appointments and has conducted consultations in the coffee bar, rather than in his office. Standards have slipped, it seems. Things have become quite slack.

And that's because Robert is under pressure. His wife, Gail, has left him and taken Jason, their son, with her. Jason also seems to be suffering from the effects of stress. He has dreams and nightmares, but it may be his fraught father's anxiety that he has caught. Robert has become so forgetful, it seems, that he does not remember whether he has replaced a loose floorboard or two in the house.

And the stress shows particularly when he drives. There's a crossroads on the way to work, one of those four-lane-ends where no-one has a right of way. The behaviour, both the predictable and the less so, of other drivers invariably frustrates Robert to his core, whenever he has to negotiate such a crossing. One of these days, that crossing will surely be the death of him, especially now that his mind is often so far away.

His mind is preoccupied with a departed wife and son, a father hospitalised and in a coma, his organs failing. His secretary announces she is seriously ill and surely Dr Harding is about to push him out. But then a patient, Miss Blessing, who does not wear disguise, offers him a pill containing a concoction she swears will help. Robert takes it, and from then on he sees a world of dreams, or maybe he dreams his world. Robert finds solace in Alison's company. And he rediscovers music, unearths the clarinet he disposed of years ago and begins to explore nostalgia. But he is not eating properly, and can't sleep, and pills don't seem to help...

And then? Well, after losing his own plot, spending his waking hours attacking his own dreams or being attacked by them, there comes a strange revelation that provokes thought and a change of approach. He thus finds a life changed, and perhaps it might be his own.

Stormy Weather by Dermot Davis is an easy but thought-provoking read. Via the fiction of Robert Munro, it explores the blur between dream and reality, and the gaps between experience, perception and imagination. Dermot Davis's touch might be light, but the involvement with character his writing provides is surely profound.

Lawrence Professor of Communication and Professor of Political Science at the University of Washington, Seattle, where he is also director of the Center for Communication and Civic Engagement (www.engagedcitizen.org). His research and writing addresses how communication processes and technologies can enhance citizen engagement with politics and social life. Bennett has received the Ithiel de Sola Pool Lectureship and the Murray Edelman Distinguished Career Award from the American Political Science Association; a Doctor of Philosophy, honoris causa, from Uppsala University; the Olof Palme Visiting Professorship in Sweden; and the National Communication Association Distinguished Scholar career award.

Observers of American elections regularly bemoan the lack of substance in contemporary political campaigns. However, while the need for substance has been clearly articulated, the remedy is not so apparent. Meanwhile, a sea change in the conduct of American politics continues to increase the public's dependence on campaigns for political information. The traditional competition between parties has evolved into a clash of candidates. This clash increasingly occurs over the airwaves and through other means of direct contact, largely at the expense of previous mechanisms that mediated contact between politicians and the public. For voters, the campaign is the proximate source of information about the candidates and the most immediate influence on their decision. For candidates, the campaign offers the best opportunity to hear the public's voice, to clarify long-term goals, and to establish immediate political priorities. Thus, the lack of substance alarms citizens and scholars alike and underscores the importance of an investigation of the dynamics supporting substantive campaigns. In what follows, I attempt to expose the roots of this problem and then to isolate the factors that either elevate or debase campaign discourse.

Because sometimes one isn't enough

I'll take just a second to explain that Wicked Reads is not a series, is merely a collection of short stories by the Wicked Writers. The order is just based on publication date. We will be bringing you reviews for some of the other stories in this series throughout the month. And now.... my thoughts on this one.
Wow! Some girls just get all the luck! Lauren has been dating Adam for 18 months. He is the perfect guy in almost every way, their sexual chemistry is amazing, and she really has nothing to complain about. Well, except for the fact that he's a doctor and is away all week and she only gets to see him on the weekends. Could that be enough for her?

Except Adam has other plans for her. She hasn't met his brother Garreth yet, but Garreth knows all about her. Adam is in love with her, she is the one, he wants to keep her. But he also wants to share her. And not just for one night. But what would be the best way to ask her to be in a relationship with both? That they can both love her and please her?

Short, incredibly hot and sexy, with some extremely hot and sexy guys that are so different from each other but can love her in two completely different ways, and together fulfill all her desires.

Lauren loves Adam but there is definitely something missing in their relationship. Things are hot and heavy between them on the weekends but during the week Adam is busy piloting people around the world. Lauren needs more from their relationship; she needs some loving during the week as well.

Adam is so in love with Lauren and he knows she needs more from him and he has the perfect solution. Garret is a race car driver and Adam's brother. Garret's job is a strictly weekend thing and Adam sees this as the perfect solution to Lauren's and his problems. Now all he has to do is make Lauren and Garret fall for each other as well.

Torn between two Brothers is hot and spicy! Adam is oh so willing to make his woman happy including giving her to his brother during the week. I adored Lauren's reaction to her first encounter with Garret. It brought a bit of funny into this erotic novella and was honest. Cathryn Fox has delivered a sexy arousing treat. Torn between two Brothers is right where you will want to be.

War Years with JEB Stuart

Blackford started out as one of General Stuart's staff and then was detailed to the ANV Engineer Corps. He's acerbic, opinionated and occasionally thick-headed (as when he fails to notice, during the retreat to Appomattox, that anything is wrong). He gives a good description of the Battle of First Manassas and accounts of several other battles and campaigns, including Gettysburg. Although Blackford is justly best known as a Stuart chronicler, the most unique information given in the memoir is the description of how the Engineer Corps built the trenches at Petersburg. Blackford's endearing descriptions of his horses add a human touch.

This is, so far, in the category of the #1 best Confederate memoir for my personal home library and book collection. Highly recommended! This is truly a "You are there" reading experience that is better than any channel on tv or cable! This book should be included in the high school curriculum for every student in the USA. Home-schooling parents -- who are always ahead of the education industry curve and PC fads, get it NOW, please!

An amazing memoir! A definite must have for any Southerner for his/her library. Blackford is a primary source reference frequently used in the narration of The Sectional War and some of his battlefield accounts make you hold your breath for his heroism. He gives a real view of life in the cavalry alongside the flamboyant and lovable JEB Stuart. I can't recommend it highly enough!

The second half of the study scrutinizes the philosophy of nature and history that Sandino made his own. Hodges delves deeply into this philosophy as the supreme and final expression of Sandino's communism and traces its sources in the Gnostic and millenarian occult undergrounds. This results in a rich study of the ways in which Sandino's revolutionary communism and communist spirituality intersect—a spiritual politics that Hodges presents as more realistic than the communism of Karl Marx.
While accepting the current wisdom that Sandino was a Nicaraguan liberal and social reformer, Hodges also makes a persuasive case that Sandino was first and foremost a communist, although neither of the Marxist nor anarchist variety. He argues that Sandino's eclectic communist spirituality was more of an asset than a liability for understanding the human condition, and that his spiritual politics promises to be more relevant than Marxism-Leninism for the twenty-first century. Indeed, Hodges believes that Sandino's holistic communism embraces both deep ecology and feminist spirituality—a finding that is sure to generate lively and productive debate.

Chapter 5 examines the lessons learnt from this study and, in particular, looks at the mental approach required when seeking such foresight. Finally, Chapter 6 provides a fully worked example. It uses work by Frank Stech who has applied Turner's theory to a past case.

About the Author
Dr Mike Lauder MBE has worked in risk management for the last 30 years. He is now an independent researcher and a visiting fellow at Cranfield School of Management, where he undertook his doctorate studying risk governance and the process, outcomes, effectiveness and efficacy of public inquiries. He has a wide range of experience in this field covering his time in the military and as a consultant. He has practical experience of risk management as a military engineer, including work in bomb disposal and as a security specialist. He has worked in both construction and procurement project management and has wider experience of logistic operations and corporate financial planning. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute and has published in Risk Management Professional, the magazine of The Institute of Risk Management.

A management tool for generating foresight

Dr. Mike Lauder's new book is fascinating. He revives an earlier work by B.A. Turner, extending Turner's thinking and developing a tool that executives and risk managers can use to anticipate possible future disasters (think BP's Deepwater Horizon explosion - $61.6B as of July 14, 2016 according to BP's own statement or the flooding of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station - close to $100B cost to Japanese taxpayers according to the Financial Times, March 6, 2016).

Drawing on Turner's Disaster Incubation Theory, his own earlier work and other works in the field (by Cohen and Gooch, for example), Mike Lauder develops the Catalytic Cube, a three-dimensional framework useful in developing foresight. He then illustrates its use in the instance of the time period between the Six-Day War and the Yom Kippur War between Israel and it's neighbors. Dr. Lauder shows how decisions made during that more than six year period reduced Israel's war readiness. He illustrates how updated thinking, using the Catalytic Cube as a guide, may have helped Israel avoid mistakes of dysfunctional organizational momentum, the Plowman Effect (unintended adverse consequences of plans in place), practical drift (efficacy of standards and precautions reduced over time as the environment changes) and structural secrecy (important groups not effectively communicating with each other).
