Short and Concise: Definitely worth the $5

I think one of my favorite parts about the book is the free audio book addition.

Lately I've been doing a lot of driving so it is nice to listen to these self help how to guides while I drive.
Definitely makes me feel like I am taking advantage of my time, so props to the author on supplying the audio book for free.

On to the actual book:

It is a brief 70 pages or so. Which is typically a good sign to me.
Anytime I download a self help book, I am looking for clear concise content.
Any self help book that is several hundreds of pages long, is typically filled with fluff and non useful information.

The book is broken into the following 6 steps

Step 1: Getting in the money making mindset

This section features some content that I've seen in other books before, but the purpose of providing this content has a a definite purpose and enriches the rest of the book.

Step 2: Understanding College Financial Aid 101

This section is HUGE for High School Seniors about to go into College, Parents sending a child to college for the first time, or anyone who has not waded through the financial aid process themselves. The content in this section is available elsewhere online, but not all in one place, and not in such a clear and concise format.

Step 3: The Hunt is On: Finding Scholarships That Have Little Competition Yet Can Fund Your Free Ride

In this section we encounter brand new content straight from the source. The $5 value is covered in this section tenfold.

Step 4: Heat Up Your Application - Successful Strategies on Becoming a Competitive Candidate

At first glance this seemed a bit of common sense to me. As I was reading I caught myself. I definitely did not think about these strategies when I was still in college, and I know I definitely would not have thought of them while still in High School. It was at this point in the book that I found myself aligning with a lot of the other reviewers in feeling the "I wish I'd known this way back when" feeling. Nostalgia hit me hard, and I can really see how this book could benefit students.

Step 5: Crushing Scholarship Applications one at a time Choosing Your Process

To a High School or College student, procrastination runs rampant. One of the only ways to get teenagers to work through applications like this is to give them very concise instructions. This section accomplishes that, I believe.

Step 6: You've Won The Money: Closing the Deal So More Money Comes Your Way

This section touches on two very key lessons in life: showing gratitude, and paying taxes.
There is still nothing that beats a quality Thank You letter, so I was pleased to see this taught as common practice.
The taxes section would also be quite useful to students, as taxes are not something many are accustomed to thinking about at their current stage of life.

In closing: This is a short, informative, and pleasant read that would have greatly benefited me were I still in college. I look forward to seeing some success stories this book will undoubtedly create. WARNING This book has too many reviews on the same day: September 19, 2014 and many reviewers only reviewed this book, And the ones that have more book reviews, they coincidentally have reviewed other 2 or 3 books that are the same. There are services that if you pay, the will fill your book with positive reviews.
I got the book and it is OK. for $5 It is good advice if you are just starting your money for college search.

When I first picked up this book, I was a bit leary. I'm a history buff with an appreciation for academia, but decidedly not an academic. Thus, I don't want to read too much analysis as to the whats, wheres, whys, whens and ways things were done -- just give me the scoop and understand that I do want some detail.

It appears that the editor of this book, Geoffrey Parker, gets it. "The Cambridge History of Warfare" could have been too academic: Its writers are all PhDs whose writings are probably not the most accessible to the layperson. But the end result -- a readable and engaging recounting of the evolution of western warfare -- couldn't have been an accident. The tone and voice of the book is extremely consistent and engaging, and does not feature paragraph-long sentences or tongue-twisting jargon.

My only qualification to my positive feelings for this book is that the end chapters (regarding the world wars and the Cold War) seem to move away from the book's overall goal of charting the evolution of the West's style of warfare, becoming more of a blow-by-blow account of the battles that take place. Not to say that the point is abandoned -- it's not -- but it's less clear.

If you're interested in military history, this is a great book to check out.

About the Author
Lawrence Raab is the author of seven previous collections of poems, including What We Don't Know About Each Other, which was a finalist for the 1993 National Book Award.  He has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Massachusetts Council on the Arts, and the Guggenheim Foundation, as well as numerous residences at Yaddo and MacDowell.  He teaches literature and writing at Williams College.

Where has this poet been all this readers life

I wonder why I never heard of Lawrence Raab before. His poetry is thoroughly enjoyable. The language, images, common occurrence subjects - fortune cookie (if this is a subject in a poetry book, then you know the poet's work is very approachable).

Following is the excerpt from an article "How to Pay Attention to a Poem":
“Don’t worry about the consequences until you’ve noticed all you can,” Raab says. “With this poem, or any, it’s important to avoid being reductive. A good poem resists paraphrase, refuses to let its meanings become too simple, like an answer found in the back of a textbook or a truism in a fortune cookie. No good poem, especially one as mysterious and reticent as ‘Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening,’ ever exhausts itself, even as it turns itself over to you, the reader. So you may secretly carry it around, discovering—perhaps by surprise, as I have—that you know it by
heart and then, years later, remembering it as a kind of revelation and finding it has changed, since you yourself have changed.”

_If you have ever been intimidated by the multi-volume scholarly translations of the Upanishads, then this book is for you. I still marvel at how Prabhavananda and Manchester managed to encapsulate so much of the core content and meaning of the twelve principle Upanishads in such a slim volume. Yet they did- and it works.

_Of course if you truly understand these oldest of mystical scriptures then you could condense them down still further to:

Brahma is true, the world is false,

The soul is Brahma and nothing else.

_Or if that is a bit wordy for you, then you can sum up the Upanishads, and all the Vedas, with: "Tat tvam asi" (Thou art that.)

_Most people need to work up to the true understanding of these statements with a bit more commentary, however....

A much needed book in a landscape full of speculation

New Testament scholars, quick to dismiss evangelical leanings toward belief that the Gospels are verbatim accounts by eyewitnesses, should think again if they think they have silenced their critics.
Wells has shown that questioning a few assumptions can lead to vastly different conclusions. The assumption he questions is that the general framework of the gospel accounts is based in fact. His different conclusion is that the Jesus that Christians know and love is mostly or all a legendary character.
Basically, taking Paul's earliest writings (which predate the gospels), Wells examines the growth of a tradition which added more and more on to the idea of Jesus, which is how myths work.
Scholars have turned their nose up to this theory, citing that Wells is not accepted in scholarly circles and that he is just a German professor, instead of providing some reasons that Wells's inference from the known data CAN'T work.

A REVISION OF THIS BOOK BY THE PRIMARY "JESUS MYTH" ADVOCATE

George Albert Wells (born 1926) is an Emeritus Professor of German at Birkbeck, University of London. He also wrote books such as The Historical Evidence for Jesus, Who Was Jesus?, The Jesus Legend, etc. This 1986 edition is a revision of his 1975 book.

He wrote in the Introduction, "In my earlier book, The Jesus of the early Christians: A study in Christian origins... my purpose was to show the difficulties and problems which arise when the gospels are interpreted as historical records, and how Christianity could have arisen even had there been no historical Jesus... In the present book I discuss... more fully... the gospel evidence for Jesus' existence... In this present book, I try to indicate more fully what motives led to their [gospels'] composition." (Pg. 2-3)

Of the quotations in Josephus [The Works of Flavius Josephus, Vol. IV], he comments, "In Josephus' entire work the word 'Christ' occurs only in the two passages about Jesus and his brother James. This hardly strengthens the case for their authenticity... The words have the character of a brief marginal gloss, later incorporated innocently into the text. Josephus probably wrote of the death of a JEWISH Jerusalem leader called James, and a Christian reader thought the reference must be to James the brother of the Lord... Other interpolations are known to have originated in precisely such a way." (Pg. 11)

He argues, "The view that the passage [about the Lord's Supper in 1 Cor 11:23-25] is a cult-legend is supported by the fact that the version of it recorded in the earliest gospel (Mk 14:22-25) does not fit the context the evangelist has given it... the command to 'do this in remembrance of me' is recorded in Paul's version... but not in the gospels (except in some manuscripts of Lk [22:19])... To suggest that an ordinance of such importance was made by Jesus, but forgotten by all the evangelists... is tantamount to abandoning all confidence in the gospels." (Pg. 27)

He asks, "Why is it that, although many theologians have their doubts about a great deal that is recorded in the gospels, nearly all commentators try to preserve a historical nucleus and shrink from admitting that the chief character in the story is legendary? One reason... is that there is now such a vast literature on Jesus that further contributors to it are more than pleased if they can convince themselves they they do not need to study certain elements of it." (Pg. 205) He further wonders, "Where is the difference between saying that we know next to nothing about Jesus and the position that the NT provides insufficient basis for believing that there was a historical Jesus?" (Pg. 214)

Wells [as well as Robert Price's Deconstructing Jesus, and Earl Doherty's more derivative The Jesus Puzzle] is probably the best advocate of the "Jesus Myth" theory today, and his writings (which overlap, somewhat) are "must reading" for anyone studying this matter..
