About the Author
Melanie J. Morgan is a pen name for, Michael Joseph Pellowski, a writer who began his comics career in the 1970s. Prior to comics Pellowski was a professional football player with the New England Patriots, from 1971-1973. Pellowski has also worked as a teacher, in the subjects of art, heatlh, and philosopy. He has written several stories for Archie Comics over the years including the "Riverdale High" series of teen fiction books.

A real surprise. Not at all what I expected.

I was not a fan of the Archie "New Look Series". I'm a bluff old traditionalist who thinks Archie and his "pals 'n' gals" should stay firmly in the tradition of Bob Montana and Dan DeCarlo. So when Archie Comics decided to start publishing a more "realistic" version of Archie in their various digests, I was not interested. I felt they strayed too far from what makes Archie...well...Archie.

So how did I end up with this book? Actually, it was sent to me as compensation for some comics that got damaged on their way to me from an eBay seller. He offered "a couple of Archie digests and a trade paperback", so I thought "why not"? The digests were typical Archie fare, but I was a bit disappointed to see that the trade was a "New Look" volume.

Then I noticed the artist. Norm Breyfogle. Norm Breyfogle? The guy I followed for years on "Detective Comics" and "Batman"? (In my opinion, the last great Batman artist.) Archie by Norm Breyfogle? This I *had* to check out.

Sure enough, all of Breyfogle's trademark swooping layouts and dramatic facial expressions are on display. As dynamic as anything he did for DC. And his take on the characters is distinct, yet they don't look out of place. It still somehow feels like Archie and Co. (It pays to use good artists, after all.)

Melanie J. Morgan's story is a fairly straightforward Archie tale, as Archie's dad gets a better job in another town and Archie and his friends have to cope with the fact that he's moving away. Yeah, not exactly Earth-shattering, I know. But no matter how cliché or derivative the story is (I even found a 1970s Archie comic with basically the same set-up) it is still handled well. Everyone is in character and reacts as one would expect. Unlike the two "fantasy" threads running through "Life with Archie" (one where he marries Betty, the other where he marries Veronica), the "New Look" doesn't mean "new characterization". These are the same people, just drawn differently.

I can't say enough how relieved I was that this story *wasn't* a travesty, as it so easily could have been. Would it surprise you to learn I bought two of the original art pages from this story? (How's that for a turnaround on the "New Look"?)

New Archie is a step above the rest

The Archie new look series is a bold step in the Archie mythos. This book (Goodbye Forever), Archie New Look Series Volume 1: Betty & Veronica - Bad Boy Trouble (v. 1) and Archie New Look Series Volume 2: Jughead - The Matchmaker are stories previous reprinted in Atchie digests. In this larger format, this four part Archie story is a great read.

Writer Melanie J. Morgan has a great handle on the citizens of Riverdale and its favorite red-headed son. The art of Norman Breyfogle is stronger and more realistic...not as comicish as the Archie comics usually are. Combining Morgan's Penmarkship and Breyfogle's artistic style makes this graphic novel something you want to read if you are a fan of the Archie comics.

This Archie book fits into the framework of the classsic books, but boldly goes into new styles like The Archie Wedding: Archie in Will You Marry Me? (The Married Life Series). It forays into a realm that brings Archie comics into 2000's with a bang!

The storyline of Mr. Andrews getting a new job and the family moving isn't a new storyline. This story seems to flesh out this idea and bring it to being real with its fresh approach. It works on so many levels

I think I'd have developed into a better artist all around as it provides a process to ...

I just received my copy in the mail today, and I think this book is very well done. I was looking for something a little less "rudimentary" regarding Mr. Blando's process and style, but I can already tell this is going to be a go-to book for many budding and aspiring young cartographers. If this book had existed when I was discovering RPGs in junior high, I think I'd have developed into a better artist all around as it provides a process to explore one's own map-making and drawing skills.

The book seems to be written to directly address a person who is inspired by their imagination to create their own RPG world. How do you get the ideas out of your head and into a map that will help you play out the stories you want to tell? It's not necessarily written for more advanced and developed map-makers or cartographers, but speaks right to the heart of the need of those that have never made a map before and are bursting with ideas. The step-by-step methods he outlines are simple, and he takes it from an analog rather than a digital perspective. Anyone using a computer can certainly follow his outline, but he assumes his readers don't have a fancy computer program they've somehow mastered with all its bells and whistles. This book is more of pencil-and-paint approach, not a Photoshop recipe.

It also has a LOT of visual examples. The vast majority of the book gives examples but doesn't delve into specifics: "Step 1, Draw the henge. Step 2, Add detail. Step 3, Add finishing detail." It doesn't ever tell you how to draw the henge or add the details, it instead shows visual examples of how Mr. Blando does it. So there are lots and lots and LOTS of visual illustrations that are really inspirational. 30 years ago when I was in junior high, this book would have been too cost prohibitive to print. But today, it's a visual treat that young people get to enjoy.

My only regret (and perhaps some day Mr. Blando will write another book addressing it) is that it's a little too rudimentary for more advanced fantasy cartographers or fans of his work. I suspect, however, that may have had something to do with his editors and publishers.

Mr. Blando creates stunningly beautiful and imaginative cartography with a very high level of detail. And probably the best thing about this book is that it helps raise one's awareness of the thinking that goes into that detail. It parses his approach out into elements that a casual viewer can use to go back and appreciate his work (and all fantasy cartography) with new eyes. Helping budding cartographers become aware of all those possible aspects to creatively express one's own imagination through artistic mapping is probably the most valuable and impacting contribution this book will make. It's going to influence a lot of beginning mappers, like similar "How to Draw" books have made on impressionable young artists. And ultimately that's a good thing.

I recommend gifting this book to the young RPG'er in your life. They'll devour it.

Lightweight, inspirational

This thin book is a lightweight inspirational jewel. It is a bit sparse. It's not the densest encyclopedia of fantasy map making techniques you can get (are there any?) It has some great inspirational examples, step-by-steps on all the aspects of pulling together a compelling fantasy map (I wish there were more steps, more variations). I am glad I got this book for my art stash.

Good Book for Intermediate Artist

The book is good, and quite interesting. It covers quite a few different sections, from how to draw coastlines to rivers to mountains and foothills to forests to... you get the idea. There was a lot of step-by-step and some suggestions for how to place land features and how to spice up the maps with extra little quirky bits like troll holes in mountains or flags on top of castles... which was really great.

What was less than great was that the step-by-steps seemed to leave out a few steps. They all assumed that the reader was already a reasonably accomplished artist and skilled at drawing in general. Perhaps I expected too much from the book. I was able to copy some of the figures, and I got some reasonably good mountains and foothills, but it was difficult to understand how to get from one step to another or how to accomplish some of the techniques described.

It's not magic. This book will not instantly make you into a masterful illustrator. If you can hold a pencil and put in some effort, you'll get results. Maybe not grand hang-it-on-the-wall results, but fair.

If you're already a fair artist, this book is good. If you're a complete beginner, you will not get as much out of it but the ideas and concepts will still be useful. I would definitely say this book is targeted at the mildly-below-mid-level fantasy cartographer-to-be.

About the Author

Should have read first

Not having read anything by this author, I began reading this series without quite knowing what to expect. I had saved them all to read for an upcoming vacation, however, couldn't stand the temptation and began to read.... and read, I did! Once I started, I could not stop - from one book to the other.

This is a refreshingly written series of the Highlander Clans in Scotland. Each book has approximatly three sets of characters it focuses on, yet still interweaves others from past groups into the next. It slowly progresses through three generations. I could have kept on reading!

I enjoyed the way this author mixed the characters and the love stories. I enjoyed the fact that romance & love could be found without embarassing details. I also, liked how each title had a number in the series on it, making it easy to follow from one to the next.

When I first bought the other books, I missed this one in the group, so I didn't read it until last. It should be read first, because it gives the back ground of how this particular clan got started.

Although not a major literary piece, this group of books is thoroughly enjoyable and filled with intersting details of the time period. For this reason, I have given them ALL a five star rating!

As a "saga" I thought this book was just ok, and easy to read.

As a "romance", this book was a big disappointment. The two g r a d u a l l y and s l o w l y, fall in love as teenagers. The day they admit their love, he is kidnapped and sold into slavery. The next 2+ years is about him being a slave, nothing about her life.

the book description states someone is trying to kill the beloved laird. Unfortunately, the author lets you know from the start who that someone is. And its all talk and "plans", I dont remember an actual attempt being made on his life. There was absolutely no mystery or intrigue.

I read this after I had read all the rest of her Highlander series. It just proved to be another great book. I am a big fan of Marti's, and devour any of her Highlander books. I love the fact that they capture my attention, but are clean so I don't have to worry about any smut throwing me a curve ball when I'm least expecting it. As soon as I find out that there's another book in this series, I purchase it and am in book heaven.

Buy the 6th Edition

This review applies only to this edition (7th). This edition is a significant down-edit of the 6th edition. Whole chapters were removed and only some of them were placed on the publishers website. A page with an password is provided to access the old chapters online, but still I would prefer not having to bother. I recommend buying the 6th edition unless you want to juggle a book and a computer.

I currently am teaching an introduction to materials science class with this book. The 7th edition is a real step down from the 6th edition. Too much critical material was removed. I must supplement the course material with sections from other texts to ensure the students are taught the the major fundamental concepts. Come on Shackelford, not including the Hall-Petch relation in this text is like removing any mention of Moses from the Bible. I NO NOT recommend this edition for anyone

Introduction to Materials for Engineers – this is the book that was required for my Nuclear Materials class. This is a very good book. Although I would have only purchased it for a class it is still an interesting book. If you need it for class, I do definitely recommend it. If you are an engineer or scientist that is interested in materials you may like it. The book is broken up into a very logical structure and makes a lot of sense. It is also full of tables and figures to help with the explanation of the reading. The appendixes are also very useful and have been helping greatly with the homework. I use the book daily and will for the remainder of the class. Again, must have for college if the 7th edition is what you are looking for.

Bigger and Better

I've loved every installment in this series and Legacy is no different. Mr. Kellen takes everything I enjoyed in the previous books and expands it tenfold. From the relatively small and narrow focus of Elegy, Christopher pulls back the camera and gives us a taste of the world beyond in this novel length adventure.

The world is bigger, the battles are bigger, the lore is expanded and the scope of the story shifts from merely following D'Arden towards encompassing characters from the previous stories and sets the stage for some truly epic adventure and drama to come.

As an author Christopher has expanded his skills so greatly that this almost feels like its from a different writer. As much as I loved Elegy, there were a few clunky passages which are to be expected from a first time author. However Legacy is lean, mean and any rough edges seem to have been polished away.

I won't talk about the story because its well described in the item description. However I will say that some great battles, monsters and settings await in Legacy. I don't know how long he intends to continue this series but the story could go in a million different directions by its end. Legacy is another great installment in the adventures of D'Arden and I already eagerly await the next book. If you're a fan of fantasy, sword and sorcery or the works of other great indie authors like David Dalglish definitely pick this series up, its a blast.

Keeps getting better.

I've been eagerly awaiting this book since I finished Elegy (The Arbiter Codex) and heard that Mr. Kellen had a sequel in the works.

We pick up shortly after the last book left off, and Kellen doesn't give our heroes any chance to rest. Bigger problems abound. Actions sequences are gritty and even more epic. We find out more about the world, the history of the Arbiters, meet new characters, and some characters from the other Eisengoth stories, which I was VERY excited about.

The most impressive aspect of this book and Mr. Kellen's writing of it, is he wraps up everything very nicely. The book's major conflict stems from choices D'Ardan Tal make in book one, and each step of the way, the character's choices affect the outcome of the book. The most impressive part of this book is that, while it leaves things open to go in any number of directions for future books, it ties up all the problems and questions that arise from this book and the previous volume in the series. I see this so rarely in traditionally published fantasy, where it seems that editors are afraid to force the writers tie up the loose ends so they can make sure people will want to buy future books. I applaud Kellen for being able to tie up the plots and conflict central to this book while leaving us knowing that there is more, so much more to come.

As someone who is well versed in both traditional and Indie fantasy fiction, I do not think if this as an Indie/self-published book, or Christopher Kellen as an Indie writer; I consider Christopher Kellen one of fantasy's shining new stars. If you don't read him, you're missing out.

Even better than the first

Another strong book by Mr Kellen.

Elegy provides more information about the Arbiters and how the division between good and evil occurred. While the ending of this book seemed abrupt, I would still recommend it to anyone who enjoys fantasy novels. Have downloaded book 3 and can't wait to start reading.
