Sullivan provides little commentary, allowing the various authors gathered here to speak for themselves. The decision opened up what may be the social debate of the decade, and these two titles help to bring the arguments into sharper focus. Same-Sex Marriage, Pro and Con begins with an historically enlightening essay by Sullivan, fomer New Republic editor, whose book on gays and the gay rights movement (Virtually Normal, LJ 9/15/95) shot one of the first broadsides about the same-sex marriage issue. Sullivan explains how this latest "assault" on family values is simply the latest in an ongoing evolution of the marriage institution, from ancient real estate deals to the present-day spiritual bonding of intimates. Other essayists discuss the various arguments from historic, religious, legal, and public-policy points of view. From Plato to Ann Landers, society's experts and pundits, academics and politicians present their views. By contrast, Same-Sex Marriage: The Moral and Legal Debate is authored mainly by professors and journalists, giving this title a drier, more academic tone. Oddly, the book also exhibits more polar oppositions and extremist views on the subject. The focus strays somewhat from the marriage theme and includes articles on counseling same-sex couples and even making the case for discrimination based on sexual orientation itself. For smaller collections that may need only one title on the subject, Sullivan's work is by far the better choice, given the depth and breadth of its coverage. A must for every library on human relationships

A great collection of arguments both for and against Same-sex marriage. Although the author admits his bias (pro) and includes many of his own arguments and essays, the book is really rather evenly done. I suspect that most people will not be swayed either way because there is plenty of reinforcement for both sides. This is a book I would like to have in my library.

A Must-read for gays AND right-wing nuts!

Sullivan has put together a definitive compilation of pro-and-con-arguments over the issue of same-sex marriage--one which demands reading by both sides in the debate. It should not, however, simply and blindly be used to bolster one's own position on the issue. Use this reader to learn why the opposition feels the way they feel and believes what they believe. Understanding the intensity of and reasoning behind these positions will doubtless improve the intellectual quality of the debate on both sides (a point our friend from the Heritage Foundation [below] and his ilk miss entirely).

Useful, but sometimes tedious

The book is indeed well-balanced, and comprehensive (considering the dearth of information and research on this subject and its relatively recent rise to a prominent place in public discussion). Highly recommended for anyone seeking greater understanding of this issue.
It is best used as a resource, rather than read straight through. The arguments presented often get bogged down in wordy legal and political jargon. Not that there isn't a place for such books; I just wish it were more accessible for the average person, so I could give a copy to my grandparents to read, for example.

She is the founder of the Shambala Preserve, a wild-animal sanctuary. She lives in Acton, California.

her beautifully written memoir

Tippi Hedren is one heck of a class act as proven in this, her beautifully written memoir. She writes with an honesty and humility that one would not expect from someone who has lived a life of such depth in the wiles of Hollywood.

Where many of her experiences could, without question, have resulted in overwhelming bitterness and resentment, Tippi writes of them with genuine grace. Having the platform of a memoir, she could have easily held court in the arena of disparagement, but instead owns each of her experiences and manages to find the spoils amongst the hurt and disappointment.

It isn't with pretention or some faux Pollyanna-esque facade that Hedren pens the navigation of her life, but with refreshingly genuine gratitude for life's ups, downs, and all-arounds.

I rarely find a memoir difficult to put down, but this one had my interest from the beginning. I read it nearly non-stop over a day and a half. The book is easy to read with lovely stories from all seasons of Hedren's life. Her movie, The Birds, was the first horror film I ever saw...probably much too young!, but I found it both insanely fascinating and intensely horrifying. Later, I studied the film in college and became a fan of Hedren's other works, subsequently stumbling upon those iconic lion photos. Tippi's tales of chasing renegade lions back to her house are hilarious!

Thank you for such an enjoyable read, Ms. Hedren. Your lovely spirit shone through on every page!

Fame survivor

Tippi Hedren doesn't jump out when one thinks of Hollywood survivors. Other than The Birds and Marnie her acting career while lengthy wasn't noteworthy. But her life is! It is rare to read about an actress whose obsession isn't herself. Ms Hedren has devoted her life to rescuing big cats and pursuing good works involving hunger. There is little sentimentality about her accomplishments in her telling. Rather she lives the best life she can. This "under the radar" actress has written a fascinating memoir. I highly recommend it to all who love to read about surviving joyfully.

Not a Pleasing Read

The best part of this book was her love and care for animals. Too many parts were disjointed and disturbing to read. I found myself having to go back for find continuity. Some times she tells how broke they are, and then proceeds to tell about safaris to Africa. For her love and care of animals I would rate her highly, as an author I would rate her so-so, but as a parent I can not give her any respect. She seems to have put animals before her children when they were growing up. I was horrified she allowed her 14 year old daughter to live with a 22 year old man.
As she relates her daughter and she are now 'best friends', but was hard for me to get beyond that.

Want to be a Winner? It's the only book you'll need.

BLACKJACK FOR BLOOD was the first book on BJ I ever read, and only because it was personally recommended to me several years ago by a professional player in Las Vegas. In retrospect, it is the only book I'd ever have needed to master the game, and I refer to it often while training, and while planning gaming trips.
While there are other BJ books that are perhaps more comprehensive about the theory and history behind the game (Julian Braun, Edward Thorpe), or more detailed about the actual life one can lead as a card counter in a casino (God, I wish I had had the chance to meet and talk with Kenny Uston before he died!) or even more fun to read (Scoblete's books are great, as well) Carlson's book is as complete as you'll need; comprehensive in its detail of the game, and all the intricacies of playing in a casino from camoflage (critical if you're going to play as a counter) to betting stategies.
When I first started playing, I just used the Basic Strategy section. When I had mastered that, I moved on to learning his Level Two count (and contrary to other reviewers, I found it easy enough to learn and master). As my game improved in actual casino play, I moved on to varying my playing (and betting) strategies based on the count of the cards. As I said, I've referred to the book often.
I now play at casinos many times a year, am almost totally comped on all my trips, and win far more than I lose. I have no desire to play professionally--why bother? But it's a terrific and lucrative hobby. And the writers, players, and counters are right: It's not the money that's the thrill for me...it's knowing you can beat the game.
Like anything else, you get out of this book what you put into it. Learning to count cards is not difficult, but it's a skill that takes work. If you really want to guarantee you'll be a winner in virtually any casino in the world, you want BLACKJACK FOR BLOOD.

AWESOME! The best BJ book in print. Period.

This book has it all. It's mathematically accurate, highly informative, up-to-date, and beautifully written. In addition, Carlson's anecdotes of high-roller life in the casino fast lane make for a really fun, entertaining read. Carlson is both a mathematician and a successful high-stakes Blackjack player, and he presents the concepts behind card counting in an easy-to-understand way that is informative, practical and very entertaining. This book is just chock full of priceless information. It presents the theory of card counting, basic strategy, game selection, camouflage, casino comportment, special "commando" tactics, money management, risk of ruin, etc., etc., as well as Carlson's own Advanced Omega II System, which all the experts agree is the strongest BJ system going. AOII is a level-2 card-counting system that I've found easy to learn and easy to use. And it works! It really gets the money. K-O and Hi-Lo don't come close. This book is da bomb! If you could only have one book on BJ, this should definitely be it. Highly recommended.

Great for all levels of play

Blackjack for blood is a great beginner as well as advanced guide to playing blackjack. For the beginner, the description and charts on playing basic strategy are great. For the intermediate player, the book offers a basic hi/lo card counting strategy. And for the advanced player, the book introduces an advanced level two count system that is more accurate to use than the simple hi/lo system. The level two system, however, is slightly more complicated and requires the player to practice longer in order to master. The author also explains all of this in an easy to understand narrated format that makes the book quite enjoyable to read. For advanced players that want to learn the intricacies of the probability theory behind blackjack, I strongly recommend reading "Professional Blackjack" by Stanford Wong. I definitely give this book 2 Thumbs UP! Maybe the only blackjack book you'll need to succeed!

Aloysius Lim has a knack for translating complex data and models into easy-to-understand insights. As cofounder of About People, a data science and design consultancy, he loves solving problems and helping others to find practical solutions to business challenges using data. His breadth of experience―7 years in the government, education, and retail industries―equips him with unique perspectives to find creative solutions.

William Tjhi

William Tjhi is a data scientist with years of experience working in academia, government, and industry. He began his data science journey as a PhD candidate researching new algorithms to improve the robustness of high-dimensional data clustering. Upon receiving his doctorate, he moved from basic to applied research, solving problems among others in molecular biology and epidemiology using machine learning. He published some of his research in peer-reviewed journals and conferences. With the rise of Big Data, William left academia for industry, where he started practicing data science in both business and public sector settings. William is passionate about R and has been using it as his primary analysis tool since his research days. He was once part of Revolution Analytics, and there he contributed to make R more suitable for Big Data.

Practical examples and detailed explanations

I enjoyed reading this book and following the code examples.

The first chapter does a good job explaining the internals of R and analyzing its performance characteristics.
It does not dissect the complete language (for that I would recommend you Advanced R from Hadley) but the important parts which impact performance.

The second chapter shows you several tools and techniques to measure and profile your code.

The simple tweaks chapters are quite illustrative and have very interesting examples.
For example just switching the BLAS version included with R with the one that comes with Mac OS X shows great performance improvement.
It explains and gives you advice on how to choose the right data structures. Don't make everything a data.frame!

One of the most interesting chapters for me was Processing Large Datasets with Limited RAM.
With the size of current available datasets, the amount of RAM available becomes an issue.
The author discusses several techniques and libraries to deal with this issue.

Another well explained section is Parallel Computing. It has very nice examples as well.
This topic is really important to fully utilize the CPUs we have paid for in our PCs.

I also liked the GPU chapter, I was not aware of the GPU support in R.
It is a very nice surprise and if you don't have a computer with GPUs you can try one of the Amazon AMIs the author suggests.
GPUs are the state-of-the-art in Deep Learning and it is great to see that R has libraries that support it.

The last chapter introduces the use of R and Hadoop to deal with large scale processing.
It gives you a nice step-by-step setup so you can try in Amazon.

In summary I recommend this book, although the content is broad, it gives you enough for you to start going deeper in any of these topics.

R High Performance Programming is probably a unique book in terms of the material covered, I just have not see yet to date a book that is dedicated to increasing the computational capacity of the R language.

And I need to state frankly, since R has left the academic circles a long time ago and now is being used more and more in applications involving the Big Data calibre of projects a developer or an R user needs to understand its limitations and perhaps even be able to shrug off some misconceptions that surface on and off about the R’s Big Data suitability.

This book will make you prepared to cope with those who encroach on R’s capability to process petabytes of data. Bedsides, since the authors have a very broad outlook on the technologies and succeeded to cover very difficult topics in simple terms this book actually is of an asset to any software developer, using any language on any platform

What do you need for this book: preferably a *NIX based 64 bit machine capable enough to run a Virtual Machine with an NVIDIA GPU. An Amazon EWS account. Eclipse R Add on (R Studio was cited as storing object state). A Windows user will be able to learn as much, but some of the libraries covered in the book (just a few) were not ported to Windows at the time of my reading.

Aloysius and William cover the code execution benchmarking techniques at the beginning very well and then make you embark on wonderful journey to exploring an array of CRAN packages, third party tools and frameworks, the book includes the use of Hadoop, PostgreSQL, MonetDB (vertical data store), Pivotal SciDB, and more so you will not be limited to a narrow subset of tools to use under your belt, it will be something like dirking from the firehose!

I read this book in one breath, it is was just that a fascinating journey. I now think I need to come back, and read several chapters of immense interest to me: code pre-compilation (just so easy to take advantage of), the FF, dplyr and BigMemory package (just take advantage of somebody giving you a hand). I will experiment with at least one database, perhaps MonetDB as being at fingertips reach.

If I had a small complaint that would be for the absence of the statistical visualizations code – I just would like to benchmark my own improvements.

All in all, it is a fantastic book, thank you Aloysius and William! A very timely release Packt!

Two good books trying to coexist in one body

R High Performance Programming is a fun book if you're interested in optimizing computation speed in R, especially if you're working with large amounts of data. I found the code examples easy to follow and the author did a good job of showing and interpreting profiling results.

Although the book has some nice examples on how to improve performance in R, and it also did a pretty good job of explaining why R's implementation can lead to bottlenecks, I had the impression that it was in the middle of an identity crisis. There was a lot of discussion of general tips on how to optimize code - preallocating data structures, using types with small memory footprints, identifying speed bottlenecks to optimize effectively, principles of parallelization - the sections that covered these issues were fairly shallow. I would expect that most readers are already familiar with the general principles outlined in the book, so they weren't the most helpful tips I've found. This becomes increasingly clear when you look at the examples the author shows you - if you're able to use the packages he introduces for using R with a GPU or Hadoop, you're already familiar with the tricks he describes.

In my opinion, the book would have been a lot more useful, had the author decided either to write about optimizing code in dynamic languages in general and then going into more detail, or if he would have made a cookbook that goes into more depth on the packages he introduced. Your mileage may vary, but although the book was well written, I would have profited more from a cookbook or even just a short summary of available packages with kurt descriptions.
