Michael Lovell has taught micro economics, macro economics, public finance and econometrics at Yale, Carnegie-Mellon University and Wesleyan University. About the Author
Diane Larsen-Freeman is Professor Emerita of Education, Professor Emerita of Linguistics, and Former Director of the English Language Institute at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She is also a Distinguished Senior Faculty Fellow at the School for International Training in Brattleboro, Vermont. Dr. Larsen-Freeman has been a conference speaker in over 60 countries of the world and has published over 100 articles in her areas of interest. Her Heinle/Cengage titles include "The Grammar Book: Form, Meaning, and Use for English Language Teachers" (third edition, 2015, co-authored with Marianne Celce-Murcia), "From Grammar to Grammaring" (2003, authored), and the fourth edition of "Grammar Dimensions: Form, Meaning, and Use" (2007, Series Director). From 1980-1985, Dr. Larsen-Freeman was Editor of the journal "Language Learning." In 1997, Dr. Larsen-Freeman was inducted into the Vermont Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 1999, she was selected by ESL Magazine as one of "the ESL pioneers." In 2000, she received the lifetime achievement award from Heinle & Heinle.

This is a very clearly written concise textbook and of all of the required books from my UC Berkeley paralegal course, this one is the best. Some have been quite disorganized, and one in particular, riddled with typographical errors. This book is actually enjoyable to read.

Origin of Species

I bought the same tiltle by the other author, Darwin, too. Considering the relationshiop between the two, the second, by Huxley should be just as good as tthe Darwin book. I wish I had read them when I was in college. I missed a lot of exciting arguments with my learned professors. This proves that "Ve get too soon oldt und too late schmart."

Need to know for cultural literacy

This is a quick review of the book not a dissertation on Darwin or any other subject loosely related. At first I did not know what to expect. I already read " The Voyage of the Beagle: Charles Darwin's Journal of Researches". I figured the book would be similar. However I found "Origin" to be more complex and detailed.

Taking in account that recent pieces of knowledge were not available to Charles Darwin this book could have been written last week. Having to look from the outside without the knowledge of DNA or Plate Tectonics, he pretty much nailed how the environment and crossbreeding would have an effect on natural selection. Speaking of natural selection, I thought his was going to be some great insight to a new concept. All it means is that species are not being mucked around by man (artificial selection).

If you picked up Time magazine today you would find all the things that Charles said would be near impossible to find or do. Yet he predicted that it is doable in theory. With an imperfect geological record many things he was not able to find at the writing of this book have been found (according to the possibilities described in the book.)
The only draw back to the book was his constant apologizing. If he had more time and space he could prove this and that. Or it looks like this but who can say at this time. Or the same evidence can be interpreted 180 degrees different.

In the end it is worth reading and you will never look at life the same way again.

Downloaded this on accident thinking it was Darwin's publication. Oops! It's essentially an essay about Darwin's findings, and although it could be nice for someone really interested in that area of science, it's rather boring for the average reader. Skip this unless you're dedicated to biology and evolution.

Strange notation.

I'm most of the way though an upper-level complex analysis course where we've used this book. The book is not bad. The sections follow a nice order, and the book is much more readable compared to Ahlfors, which I have as well. I find that Ahlfors can be very unfocused, where Palka follows a more structured pattern of presenting material. Each section contains a surprisingly large number of exercises which vary from routine computation to non-trivial proofs. Many sections have plenty of figures as well, which help show the geometry behind the complex plane. Overall, I've had a nice experience using this book, and would recommend it to other students in the future.

That is not to say that Palka is without faults. Our professor rearranged the order of the book, slightly, moving Mobius transformations close to the beginning of the course. This added insight actually made a fair number of the exercises in the middle chapters (mostly concerning Cauchy's thereoms and such) easier. Palka is also prone to being overly chatty, to the point where the the content gets watered down by his verbiage.

Most aggravating, for me, is Palka's use of notation. He strays from the general path regarding most standard notation, and prefers to adopt his own. For instance, he uses "phi" for "emptyset", "~" for set difference, and several others. While these don't necessarily make any real fault in the book, it is annoying to have to translate Palka's notation. Also, the chapters are numbered with roman numerals, then individual sections and subsections start over from "1" every time. Exercise sections are numbered with the last section of the chapter--it's somewhat of a mess. A more straightforward Ch.sec.subsec would be less confusing.

Most of these remarks are merely esoteric, though, and as said, the book is overall quite sound. It's worth having for an undergraduate course as a complement to, or in lieu of, more popular books, such as Ahlfors.

Fantastic for self study

I agree that the exposition and proof's are both wordy, but for self study I found this invaluable. I took this course as a reading course, which means no lecture accompanies the course. I find most weeks, I can solve nearly all of the problems assigned by 1-3 readings of the chapter. This is in my opinion the best book I found to date for self study. However, the addition of solutions to selected exercises would be even better. I recommend the book for those wishing for a introduction to complex analysis, or those with some background and wishing to extend their background to include the material covered on most complex qualifying exams.

Good Secondary Text

This is a good text that covers somewhat more ground than either Ahlfors or vol. 1 of Conway, including a really nice, long section on conformal mapping. There are an astonishingly large number of exercises. The exposition is generally quite good, and the proofs are thorough and very detailed.
However, I would not want to use this as a primary text because it is too long-winded. Even the proofs have a lot of unnecessary verbiage. Put simply, it takes too damned long to read. I think the happy medium lies somewhere between the slick austerity of Rudin's analysis books and the overwritten style of Palka's book.
That said, I still think Palka's book is well worth having. You may never want to read it cover to cover, but I find it very useful to turn to when I am confused by other texts, or when I want a more detailed explanation of a given topic. Chances are that I'll find it here. Also, there are lots of good concrete examples, especially in the sections on residue techniques for integration and conformal mapping. And you will never run out of interesting exercises if you have this book around.
So what is the best primary text for complex analysis? Good question, and I don't have a good answer. Conway's book is pretty nice but unexciting. Ahlfors' is generally good but requires extremely careful reading (sometimes between the lines) to catch all the nuances; it also feels a bit old-fashioned for my tastes. The recent version of Narasimhan's book, with the large collection of expository exercises by Nievergelt, is much more efficient, sophisticated, and challenging than the others and looks like it will serve as a very good reference/second course after learning the material elsewhere.

About the Author
John Piper, pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis since 1980, is the author of The Dangerous Duty of Delight, Desiring God, Future Grace, A Godward Life, and The Pleasures of God. He received his doctorate in theology from the University of Munich and taught biblical studies for six years at Bethel College, St. Paul, before becoming a pastor. He and his wife, Noel, have four sons and one daughter.

Just enough Piper to digest quickly

The book came in the mail like hundreds of others. You see, I review books for a living. In other words, I get paid to be a cynic about the publishing industry. Know up front that I don't give 5 stars lightly or easily.
I'd heard of John Piper often and heard him quoted even more so it seemed. A devotional? Maybe this will be a good introduction before reading A Hunger for God or Desiring God.
I was taking a trip and decided to take A Godward Life along since my spiritual rhythm would be off while I was gone. Little did I know that I would be caught up in the personal correspondence and private musings of one of today's greatest pastors. I read all 120 readings in 7 short days--some twice, many highlighted, a few quoted in my journal.
I read a lot of books. I've seen a thousand devotionals. This was the first one to change my life. For me, this is the My Utmost for His Highest for my generation. I can't wait for the sequel.
Be sure to read Piper's letters to the editor of the local newspaper. How refreshing. Get to know the man and his thoughts--not just his outer presentation.

Masterly Meditations on a Magnificent Maker

If you want beauty and joy and hope and gladness and delight and insight and wisdom and knowledge and encouragement and edification and discernment and inspiration and rebuke and conviction and repentance and humilty and freedom and love and courage and growth - read this book.
Piper's books are all good. And this one is no disappointment. Like book one, this book is full of reflection on Scripture, lessons from history, and insight in culture.
If you read this book, you will learn A LOT of "little things." You'll get a taste for Augustine and Jonathan Edwards. You'll learn a little bit about George Muller and David Brainerd. You'll be challenged to study and pray and persevere and worship. You'll be shocked by insightful commentary on abortion. You'll be stirred by an inspirational story of a Christian family who dug their own graves before martyrdom. You'll be instructed in difficult doctrines like the atonement and omnipotence and sovereignty.
You'll be amazed by rain. You'll find out why God created sleep. You'll be challenged on how to stay away from the traps of computer unreality. You'll be told how to keep happiness from getting thin. You'll see apparent contradictions in the Bible resolved. And you'll learn how to "drink the wine of God."
You'll learn A LOT of little things. But you'll learn one big thing in all of these little things. You'll learn what it means to savor the supremacy of God in all of life. And that's important. So get this book.

You're supposed to feel safe in your home. It's supposed to be a place where you can retreat and feel separated from the dangers of the world. You form a bond with that place, a trust even, and once it's broken, it's incredibly hard to repair. Sure, you could be afraid of someone breaking in, but what if the danger is closer than that?    What if someone is already living there and you don't know it? They could be in the attic, hiding beneath the home in a crawlspace, or simply in another room watching from the shadows and moving when you do so as not to be seen. Why are they there? Are they harmless, or do they have ill intentions? You don't know, and neither did I.    I used to be a home inspector, ironically, until I realized that the standard checks and balances that earned houses the seal of approval wasn't enough. I inspected my own home from top to bottom before we moved in and I was confident that it was safe and sturdy. My wife Ava and I loved it there at first, but then things started to change between us.    It started with little things like cabinets being left open, which she hated, and I was always blamed for it even though I knew I had closed them. Then she started hearing things at night. Bumps in the attic, tapping on the walls, those kinds of things. She was very spiritual so she immediately assumed it was a ghost or spirit haunting the home.     I of course did not believe in such things, and I had never heard of someone living in another person's home before, so I just assumed it was a pest problem. No matter what I did though, it wouldn't go away, and things started spiraling downward in our marriage. She hated me for not believing her, but I couldn't accept that our house was haunted. Even when she claimed to see someone, a lanky and pale person, walking around our house during the day and at night when I wasn't home, I still didn't believe her.    It became clear at a certain point after nine months or so, that someone was deliberately trying to ruin my marriage. Who and why was beyond me, but I started getting letters in the mail from someone who claimed to be my lover. Ava was furious, she thought I was cheating on her and she wouldn't hear a word otherwise. Eventually it became too much and one night she just left. After years of dating and planning our life together, this one incident, this one thing living in our home drove us irrevocably apart.    That night when she packed her bags and left, it was a year after we had moved into the home. I was sitting in the living room, staring into the fireplace in front of me. The fire within crackled and sparked, burning with a rage I knew all too well. I had been through every scenario, tried every solution. I tore that house apart but I never found anything that proved my theories. If I went to the police now, they would lock me up in a looney bin and throw away the key.    I took another long swig from the bottle of Jack I had opened. Ava wouldn't say a word to me. She just kept packing her things while I yelled and pleaded with her. I told her that it wasn't what it looked like, that someone was messing with us, but she didn't want to hear it. She filled up a suitcase and walked out. I grabbed the bottle of whiskey from the liquor cabinet and collapsed into a chair in front of the fire we had built only hours before. It was cold outside, too cold for someone to hide, which meant that whoever was doing this had to be inside the house.    I drank from the bottle, relishing in the pungent burn of the whiskey as it slid down my throat. I had already finished a quarter of the handle, the buzz was settling in nicely. I knew that whatever had been doing this wasn't a ghost, or a spirit, or even a demon. It was a person, someone who thought it would be fun to ruin my marriage, steal my food, and completely destroy the life I had built. I knew they would be here tonight, to witness their big victory, hiding in a cabinet or in the attic.    I looked over the side of the chair at the axe I had brought in from the shed. I had sharpened it a few days ago for chopping firewood, so it would do the trick. Whoever this was, they took everything from me. I was going to make them suffer. The best part was they had nowhere to run. I torched all of the winter clothes so they couldn't steal any and run away. There were several inches of snow and a whole lot of forest between the house and the nearest city. They would freeze to death before they could make it.    It was just the two of us now, and only one would survive the night. Every time I closed my eyes and took another drink from that bottle, I saw Ava's face, and the rage deepened. There was nothing wrong with us before this house, before this thing that wore the skin of a person. What could possibly drive someone to do something like this? It must be someone who enjoys seeing others suffer.    The bottle was halfway gone now. The warm embrace of the whiskey was coursing through my veins. My courage was mounting, and my inhibitions about what had to be done slowly started melting away. I wasn't a murderer, but I was more than ready to become one.    I finished the bottle while staring into the crackling fire. I heard the groans of the walls around me as the low temperatures contracted the wood. Amidst those noises, I heard the pattering of light footsteps in the attic. He was up there, that thing that ruined everything. I stood up from the chair, the world swam around me as my shadow danced on the walls and ceiling. I threw the bottle into the fire and watched the flames expand as if applauding my decision. I turned and picked up the axe.    "I'm coming for you bastard, you hear me?" I shouted, "I'm going to tear you apart for what you did!"  He didn't bother being quiet about it, I heard him moving in the attic above. I couldn't move very fast, the whiskey had blurred my vision and slowed my footsteps. I walked into the hallway and stopped. I had to brace myself against the wall for a moment while the world fell back into focus.    "Come out of your hiding place! Let's settle this like real men!"    I heard something scratching in the wall to my right. I knocked with a closed fist. It was hollow. I turned, raised the axe above my head, and brought it down into the wall. It broke through, sending dust and wood everywhere. I looked in through the hole and saw a thin walkway between the walls that I never thought to check.    "So this is how you got around, huh? You think you're clever? You think this is a game!"    I raised the axe again and drove it into the wall. The hole was wide enough to step through now. I stuck my whole head inside and looked around. It was too thin for me to navigate the space, but I caught a glimpse of the intruder. He was just like Ava described him: pale, emaciated, ghostly. His eyes were sunk into his skull, he looked like he hadn't been outside in a long time.    "Get over here!" I screamed.

Victor Dark spent a lifetime in libraries as a child. He graduated with an English degree from UConn and spent years working as a freelance journalist. Then one day, he realized his calling in life was to scare people silly. Currently Victor resides in Hartford with his wife and two German Shepherds, who are cheekily named Poe and Wells. When he’s not writing, Victor enjoys playing guitar and proving society wrong by teaching his old dogs new tricks.

Great read with a neat concept!

Loved the books! The concept was new, creepy and strange. Victor definitely has a talent for horror writing =)

Creepy good

I grabbed this trilogy as a free download off Amazon. It’s a great way to discover new authors.

I’ll be reading more of Victor’s stories.

From the first story to the last, you are totally emotionally engaged. You’ll want to kick some character butt, reach in and shake sense into them. Tell them, hey, don’t you know the rules on how to survive a horror story. A lot of what they do is typical screw up stuff. You shake your head, wondering, why did the author give me the same old idiots.

But, wait. That’s how you get emotionally engaged with these characters. How you come to like or loathe them, wish them to survive or die horribly.

And what’s good horror without killing off some characters. It could be someone you loathe, or that one you are really hoping will make it. Lots of twists and no guarantees.

It’s creepy good reading and I’m planning on seeing what else Victor Dark has for me.

Review: UNINVITED GUESTS TRILOGY by Victor Dark

Just when I thought I had surmounted my phobia of literary home invasions, I pick up Victor Dark' s UNINVITED GUESTS TRILOGY, and the phobia has cranked back up. Only now, instead of intrusions by those bent on robbery, desecration, and assault. I've got to worry about what--or rather, who--is inside. No, not spouses, parents, children, siblings; instead, it's the ones living in the undetected spaces of one's home. Author Dark says his calling is to scare people silly. Well, it worked.

I gave the trilogy as an entirety 4 stars. Rating the three stories separately: 5 stars for 1, 5 stars for 2, 4 stars for 3 [but 5 for the final paragraph!!]
