Buy the 6th Edition

This review applies only to this edition (7th). This edition is a significant down-edit of the 6th edition. Whole chapters were removed and only some of them were placed on the publishers website. A page with an password is provided to access the old chapters online, but still I would prefer not having to bother. I recommend buying the 6th edition unless you want to juggle a book and a computer.

I teach this course

I currently am teaching an introduction to materials science class with this book. The 7th edition is a real step down from the 6th edition. Too much critical material was removed. I must supplement the course material with sections from other texts to ensure the students are taught the the major fundamental concepts. Come on Shackelford, not including the Hall-Petch relation in this text is like removing any mention of Moses from the Bible. I NO NOT recommend this edition for anyone

Introduction to Materials for Engineers – this is the book that was required for my Nuclear Materials class. This is a very good book. Although I would have only purchased it for a class it is still an interesting book. If you need it for class, I do definitely recommend it. If you are an engineer or scientist that is interested in materials you may like it. The book is broken up into a very logical structure and makes a lot of sense. It is also full of tables and figures to help with the explanation of the reading. The appendixes are also very useful and have been helping greatly with the homework. I use the book daily and will for the remainder of the class. Again, must have for college if the 7th edition is what you are looking for.
