Gr 9 Up—Accustomed to operating outside of the major social scene, Sam is disappointed when a rare party he attends is ruined by a fight with his best friend, Hayden. Disappointment fades quickly when he discovers that Hayden killed himself afterward. Rocked by the tragedy, Sam is left puzzling over tracks that his friend left for a playlist and struggling to figure out who he is without Hayden around. Despite the heavy subject matter, the overall tone of the book is less somber than the title would indicate, and it is a quick, engaging read. Falkoff nails the war-zone mentality and painful symbiosis of high school friendships. The mixture of grief, anger, and guilt that Sam works through is realistic and well written, and his reactions to Hayden's music choices further illuminates not only his struggle but also how their friendship was beginning to change. The characters and concept work better than the plot—it gets an all-loose-ends-tied-up treatment at the end. This is especially frustrating as an entire eerie subplot is explained away in the course of a short paragraph. The strong characters, dialogue and the use of the playlist to structure the book make this a good pick for struggling readers. what songs were left behind?

****I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.****
Having read 13 Reasons Why, I initially thought about that book when I read the synopsis for Playlist for the Dead. I did worry it would be too similar, but it stands on its own two feet with Sam's voice in narrating, the mystery surrounding Hayden's death, and the things Sam learns about himself as well as Hayden. Playlist for the Dead is not only about suicide but also friendship, growing up, bullying, and finding your own path amid the pressures from parents, school, and even your friends.
The story surrounding Hayden's suicide is messy and complicated, and that's how suicide is. There's never just one reason why a person feels that's their only option; instead there's a myriad of them, and sometimes one event can push that person off the ledge much like the saying about the straw that broke the camel's back.
I felt the weight of Sam's guilt settle over me as I read. That was realistically done and as Sam unravels the mystery, he finds more and more people who are also secretly blaming themselves and wrestling with their own guilt, wishing they could have done something to change the outcome. This is one of those times where you wish badly for a rewind button.
I believe Hayden felt hopeless about all the bad things happening in his life and didn't have any fight left in him to keep trying for the good. Topped off with the events the night of the party, that was his last straw. Obviously he must have been thinking about suicide as a way out for a while - people don't just wake up one day and kill themselves. It's a slow progression downhill with a lot of time spent struggling, and thinking about all of this just made me feel so much empathy for Hayden.
I decided to make the playlist on Spotify and listen to it all the way through then listened to each song for each chapter while I read. I wanted to get into Hayden's mindset when he had made the list. Most of the songs are ones I love already, and I swear I was dissecting lyrics like crazy! I loved the references to Star Wars and especially Donnie Darko along with other geekery sprinkled throughout the story. Geek speak links directly to this girl's heart!
No, the answers weren't found in the playlist but it's what led Sam to new experiences and new people. I think it was also a way for Hayden to reach out to Sam after he knew he'd be gone, a way to say good-bye and show him there was more going on with him than Sam realized. I think Hayden wanted Sam to understand how important it is to listen to people, which Sam learns along the way. We all want to be heard. We want to be understood. We don't want to be lonely.
I ended up being torn on how many stars to rate Playlist for the Dead. What it came down to for me was I felt something was missing from the story, something I can't quite put my finger on, but it's what made the difference between my feeling that this is a four star read rather than a five star. I do know one part of the mystery could have been wrapped up better. I thought there was so much potential there that wasn't used.

Complex, emotional story with a serious heart

This one is a page-turner. I was quickly and deeply engrossed in Sam's mysteries, as he tries to work out why his friend killed himself but also resolve some more urgent and immediate questions, such as who is using his dead friend's online account...and why. Sam is a deeply sympathetic character surrounded by a strong supporting cast, and the music added an interesting layer of complexity to the story. I was about halfway through the book before I decided to listen to the songs called out in the chapter headers and found them a nice "multimedia" touch. However, they're not essential - if you don't like the music, you can ignore that aspect pretty much completely without any real loss. I was unfamiliar with half the songs before I started listening, and it didn't interfere with my enjoyment of the story.
The story wraps up nicely for the most part. I like closure, so this was mostly a good thing for me, but I have to confess that I felt one of the major plot points was shuffled off without proper attention. No spoilers from me! And I don't want to overplay it. It didn't spoil the book for me - I still really enjoyed it. It just kept the story from being the 5 star event it otherwise likely would have been for me.

Soundtrack of Their Lives

Sam, a 10th-grader was rocked and shocked to discover that his best and only friend Hayden had committed suicide. Sam felt responsible as he and Hayden had a terrible quarrel the previous night at a party. Hayden left a very potent clue, almost like a suicide note. He left a playlist and with written instructions for Sam to listen to it.
Mysteries abound. Did Hayden KNOW he was going to commit suicide? Did bullying peers, one of whom was his older brother Ryan and Hayden's last night alive at that party convince him suicide was the only answer? And who is claiming to be Hayden and contacting Sam? As with any suicide, real or literary, there is no one reason, but rather a set or series of reasons that lead up to that unfortunate decision.
I loved it when Sam stood up for Hayden at Hayden's funeral. In so doing, he meets a girl with skunk coiffure. Astrid, the girl might be the key or have the keys to why Hayden took his life. She is a very interesting character. So is Jimmy, Sam's older sister Rachel's boyfriend. Jimmy is a delightful surprise. He is also one of the voices of reason.
Hayden's theme songs could well be the (recorded in 1977, released in 1978) Paul McCartney song, "I've Had Enough! I Can't Put Up With Any More!" and the Beatles' 1965 classic "Help!" He plainly felt he had no other option but to take his life. Sadly, Sam wears the Yoke of Guilt, while understandable, is unfortunate. He is not to blame for his friend's traumatic demise.
Ironically, Sam and Hayden sounded like typical Emo youth from the mid to late 2000s. Their pop culture references; their interests and their style all speak to Emo. They make pop culture references that date to that period. They are very believable and a reader could come away thinking the story is set in the mid 2000s.
As other reviewers on the U.S. board have done, you might want to listen to the list of songs Hayden left behind. The soundtrack of his life may be enlightening to readers who want to know more about who this character was and what made him tick. As someone who often finds at least one song as underscoring a book, this part was an especial treat. I liked learning what other people's "soundtracks" were.
This book caught my eye at the library and I was drawn into the story as I loved Thirteen Reasons Why. It is an excellent book about the good, the bad and the ugly. It is also a good reminder about not judging anyone based on appearances or making assumptions for any reason about anybody. It is a really good and very edgy story with a lot of heart, excellent even with strong central characters. It is also a book that will help readers tap into the Soundtrack of Their Lives.
