Created by the bestselling SF novelist Jerry Pournelle, THERE WILL BE WAR is a landmark science fiction anthology series that combines top-notch military science fiction with factual essays by various generals and military experts on everything from High Frontier and the Strategic Defense Initiative to the aftermath of the Vietnam War. It features some of the greatest military science fiction ever published, such Orson Scott Card’s “Ender’s Game” in Volume I and Joel Rosenberg’s “Cincinnatus” in Volume II. Many science fiction greats were featured in the original nine-volume series, which ran from 1982 to 1990, including Robert Heinlein, Arthur C. Clarke, Philip K. Dick, Gordon Dickson, Poul Anderson, John Brunner, Gregory Benford, Robert Silverberg, Harry Turtledove, and Ben Bova.
33 years later, Castalia House has teamed up with Dr. Pournelle to make this classic science fiction series available to the public again. THERE WILL BE WAR is a treasure trove of science fiction and history that will educate and amaze new readers while reminding old ones how much the world has changed over the last three decades. Most of the stories, like war itself, remain entirely relevant today.
THERE WILL BE WAR Volume I is edited by Jerry Pournelle and John F. Carr, and features 23 stories, articles, and poems. Of particular note are “Reflex” by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle, the original “Ender’s Game” novella by Orson Scott Card, “The Defenders” by Philip K. Dick, and a highly influential pair of essays devoted to the then-revolutionary concept of “High Frontier” by Robert A. Heinlein and Lt. General Daniel Graham.

A Wonderful Starting Point
By Amazon Customer
This book is astonishing. A collection of short military science-fiction and essays put together in the early 80s by Jerry Pournelle, the book is older than I am and yet somehow manages to avoid seeming dated at all. The book was extremely well-regarded when it came out, and spawned a nine volume series, but for years has languished in semi-obscurity. How good is it? It's got the original "Ender's Game" novella by Orson Scott Card, and that's not even the best story in the book!
If you're a younger reader, odds are you've never even heard of half of these writers. And they're all good. The stories are diverse, with everything from post-apocalyptic shootouts to huge sci-fi space battles. Sometimes the heroes win, and sometimes they don't. But every time I found myself rooting for them.
But the real prize of the book is the non-fiction essays, which give a window into how scary the world was back when the Soviet Union was still a threat. One of the essays, 'The Soviet Strategic Threat From Space", discusses the end of the world in a cold, scientific manner that's more chilling than any fiction could ever be.
"There Will Be War" introduced me to a ton of great new authors, and entire series that I had no clue even existed. For someone who's just getting into science fiction, it's a wonderful starting point. For veterans, it's a way to revisit some of the old greats.

Wonderful Anthology by the Greats of SF
By jack
There Will be War: An anthology edited by Dr. Jerry Pournelle. This is an reissue of the first of the 'war; anthologies published in the early 1980's. There were 9 of them, all of which are due to be republished by Castalia House publishing. This review will not have a 'verified' purchase tag to it; I purchased it through Castalia and did read it. And, intend to reread it almost immediately. I had never read any of the essays and short stories offered in this work. It was like a fresh breeze into the past greatness of SF.
This is almost certainly the best anthology I have ever read. Not one of the fiction shorts is a dog, nor are the essays sprinkled within. Some are unbelievably great. From the start, reading in order, you get a little of everything. There is even a Rudyard Kipling poem at the end. Kipling! And, not everything contained is SF, though the essays compliment the fiction and deal, mostly, with speculative science and military strategy circa 1980.
A non SF offering is by James Warner Bellah, titled 'Spanish Man's Grave. Setting is the Apache wars of the later 19th. century and is as gritty as it gets sans too extreme descriptions of torture, rapine, killing, during a long stern chase by U.S. Calvary onto a marauding Apache band. This one story apparently inspired many John Wayne westerns dealing with the Calvary and even some of the inspiration for Heinlein's Starship Troopers. I can't recommend it highly enough.
Continuing there is Marius by Poul Anderson that explores the extremes of intellectual theory within war and how misguided it can turn. Then there is Enders Game by Orson Scott Card, the only one I did not read having worked my way, happily, through Card's Ender series of novels. Then, A death in Real Time by Richard McEnroe that looks at how a war fought like a video game can get nasty on a personal level.
We read Overdose by Spider Robinson that has a tongue in cheek look at Viet Nam drug use from a decidedly different slant. Yes, it is SF. Then Diasporah by W.R.Yates that gives a vignette as Israel gets into another war. There is the excellent His truth goes Marching On. This by Jerry Pournelle. By the way, Dr. Pournelle not only edited the original series but added modern 2015 comments leading into each essay/fiction story. IMO his prologues alone are worth the modest cost of this work. His Truth is an ancillary story to the widely read Falkenburg Legion series/stories. Then: The Defenders by Phillip K. Dick. Here, you see some of the problems, or 'not' problems with letting robots fight for you. Its a Phillip Dick work; what more do you need to know?
OK. Its been really good until now. Now, it gets better. How, I don't know. Maybe these next 5 or so stories resonated with me in a special way. And, I have not even mentioned the non-fiction essays, not wanting to write a short story here myself.
We have the Battle by Robert Sheckley. Once again, robots doing the fighting. But, its the final battle; Armageddon. I want so bad to tell you the ending but don't dare. Too many people would want to hurt me. Read it.
Now, my personal favorite of them all. Ranks of Bronze by David Drake. Pournelle touted Drake as the best he had ever seen at battle descriptions. Bronze may be the best description of a Roman Cohort in the assault I have ever read. True, Beales work in A Throne of Bones concerning a Roman like army was right up there. And, Rolf Nelson in The stars came Back did an in depth look at an outnumbered force trained to the Roman way of war fighting on another planet; right up there, too. But Drake really did a job on this. The details of Legionnaire spacing in the ranks, use of weapons, iron discipline, a Tribune commanding the understrength cohort with near perfect officer qualities. Its all there. And, within, a delightful and unexpected plot twist to qualify this short story as SF. Loved it.
The stories did not slack off after Ranks of Bronze. I am Nothing by Eric Frank Russell. This one may draw some tears as a hard bitten military dictator learns some needed life lessons. And, from an unexpected source, There is Call Him Lord by Gordon Dickson. This story will make you wish our own leaders were chosen and tested in such a way. The planet would be far better off if so.
Finally, Quiet Village by David McDaniel, a tribute to the Boy Scouts set into a horror of a future we all hope will never arrive. I would have gladly given this anthology 20 stars if Amazon allowed it. Consider, here, it got those 20. Do yourself a favor and buy this. I mean, this may be the best $4.99 I ever spent.

Re-issue of a mil SF classic
By Patrick S. Baker
The volume of military sci-fi and non-fiction articles brings back memories for me. I owned all of the "There Will Be War" Volumes at one time (They have subsequently been lost in one of my multiple moves). The re-issue of these books is great for a whole generation that have not yet read these wonderful stories. There is not a clunker story in the whole lot, and not many anthologies can make that claim.
I look forward to the re-issue of the rest.
